The 26.2 Step Mini Marathon has been going for ten years. For most of that time it ran as a grassroots event, and the money raised went straight to our partner charities, who held the official records. This year is different: for the first time, we are building our own 501(c)(3) nonprofit, which means the funds now run through us. That is a bigger responsibility, and it comes with a duty to be clear about how every dollar is used.
A tenth year, and a first year, at the same time
Becoming an independent nonprofit carries real, mostly one-time costs to stand the organization up. On top of that, putting on the event itself is never free. Here is the honest picture of where the retained share goes:
One-time formation costs
Incorporating in Nebraska, the federal 501(c)(3) application, trademark protection for our name and logo, board and event insurance, and setting up a bank account and bookkeeping. Several of these are being covered as donations by board members and supporters, but they still make our first year our most expensive to build.
The cost of the event
T-shirts, permits, legal and filing fees, insurance, printing, and screening supplies. Many of these are donated or absorbed outright, which is exactly why, even in a costly first year, at least 70 cents of every dollar still reaches the mission.
We will publish a full profit-and-loss statement at year-end.
After our 10-year event and once the books for the year are closed, we will publish a plain-language profit-and-loss statement showing what came in, what it cost to run our events, and exactly how much went to our partner charities. We would rather show you the real numbers than ask you to take our word for it.
