Accessibility

Everyone deserves to cross the finish line

Accessibility isn’t a feature we added. It’s the reason this event exists — 26.2 steps, not miles, so anyone can take part.

Our commitment

Built to include, by design

The 26.2 Step Mini Marathon was created around a simple belief: no one should be left on the sidelines because of what their body can or can’t do. A friend once told our founder she couldn’t run a marathon, a 10K, or even jog around the block for someone she loved — but 26.2 steps, she could do. That idea shapes our event and our website alike.

We are committed to making this site usable by as many people as possible, including people who use screen readers, keyboard navigation, magnification, or other assistive technology. Accessibility is an ongoing effort, and we treat it as part of doing this work well — not an afterthought.

How we build for access

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA as our working standard. In practice, that means:

Structure

Clean, semantic markup

Real headings, landmarks, lists, and labels so assistive technology can navigate the page the way it’s meant to be read.

Keyboard

Skip link & keyboard access

A “skip to content” link and interface elements that can be reached and operated without a mouse.

Images

Descriptive alt text

Meaningful images carry text alternatives so their content isn’t lost to anyone who can’t see them.

Contrast

Readable color & type

We choose color combinations and font sizes with legibility in mind, and avoid conveying meaning by color alone.

Responsive

Works on any screen

The site reflows for phones, tablets, and desktops, and supports zoom and larger text without breaking.

Plain language

Clear, human writing

We try to explain things — including hard medical topics — in language that’s easy to follow.

At the event

Accessibility on step day

The event itself is designed so that participation is possible regardless of ability. The route is short by design, and you’re welcome to take those 26.2 steps at whatever pace works for you, with whatever mobility aids or support you use.

If you or someone in your group needs a specific accommodation to take part — seating, a companion, a quiet space, or anything else — please reach out ahead of the event and we’ll do our best to make it work. We would always rather you ask than stay home.

A work in progress. This is a draft site, and we’re continuing to test and improve its accessibility. We aim for WCAG 2.1 AA, but we don’t claim the site is perfect or fully conformant yet — some pages, downloadable PDFs, and placeholder content are still being finished. If any part of this site gets in your way, telling us is the fastest way to get it fixed.
